How to use Hyundai’s Smart Sense safety tech in the all-new INSTER

Story

19 September 2024 – Imagine driving with an extra set of eyes, ready to spring into action at a moment’s notice. That’s exactly what Hyundai’s Smart Sense does. This advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) doesn’t just enhance safety; it gives you greater peace of mind, so you can focus on enjoying the journey.

Situated somewhere between A and B-segment models, the all-new INSTER comes loaded with a range of Smart Sense systems typically reserved for higher-segment cars. These systems actively keep an eye on your surroundings to prevent collisions, warn you of vehicles in your blind spots, and protect you from potential road hazards. These features are user-friendly and straightforward to operate. Let’s dive into how they make your drive smoother, safer, and a lot more fun:

Highway Driving Assist 1.5

Driving on motorways has never been safer and more convenient than with Highway Driving Assist (HDA) 1.5. The system helps you to maintain a set speed and distance from the car ahead while keeping your INSTER centred in its lane – even through curves.

You’ll be able to see the benefits of HDA 1.5 during long journeys on the motorway, particularly in heavy traffic or monotonous driving conditions. On top of enhancing safety, the feature reduces driver fatigue, so you won’t arrive at your destination exhausted.

The system is enhanced with additional functionalities, including Smart Cruise Control, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist, Lane Following Assist, and Driver Attention Warning. By default, all systems, excluding Lane Following Assist, related to HDA 1.5 are activated when pressing the ‘Smart Cruise Control’ button. Then, you can choose to deactivate individual features.

Your hands must be placed on the steering wheel to keep HDA 1.5 activated as it monitors torque to ensure your alertness. If it detects that you’re not holding the wheel, it will prompt you to take control and eventually deactivate if no action is taken.

Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go

Smart Cruise Control (SCC) maintains a safe following distance by intelligently engaging the brakes and adjusting the speed using front radar sensors.

Hyundai addressed the challenges of traffic with the evolution of cruise control – now including the ‘Stop & Go’ function. With this upgrade, the system adjusts the speed according to traffic flow, particularly beneficial in heavy traffic or long drives. SCC with Stop & Go can apply the brakes and accelerate back to the preset speed once the road clears. This feature also makes driving more comfortable and less tiring in stop-and-go traffic as it reduces the need for constant braking and acceleration.

To activate SCC, press the ‘Smart Cruise Control’ button on the steering wheel, set the speed using the lever, and adjust the following distance using the distance button. The system deactivates if you tap the brake or press the cancel button on the steering wheel.

Intelligent Speed Limit Assist

Integrated with SCC, Intelligent Speed Limit Assist (ISLA) informs you about the current speed limit and automatically adjusts cruise control settings to comply with changing speed limits. Utilising navigation data and the front camera to read traffic signs, ISLA ensures that you don’t exceed the speed limit.

Recently, Hyundai enhanced ISLA, giving drivers greater control over the system. The sound level of the alert can be adjusted with just a press of a button without compromising safety.

ISLA is automatically activated upon starting INSTER. If you want to turn off the speeding alert, simply long-pressing the mute button.

Lane Keeping Assist / Lane Following Assist

As the name suggests, Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) keeps you in your lane by monitoring lane markings and sending visual and audible alerts if you start to leave your lane without signalling. It uses Motor Driven Power Steering (MDPS) to apply subtle counter-steering torque, guiding you back to the centre of your lane.

Lane Following Assist (LFA) goes the extra mile and keeps INSTER centred within its lane using continuous steering assistance, even around curves.

LKA is automatically activated upon start. To turn on LFA, you need to press the dedicated button on the steering wheel every time the car is started. Once activated, always keep your hands on the steering wheel.

Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist 1.5

To help you avoid collisions with unpredictable obstacles, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA) 1.5 applies automatic braking. Utilising radar and the front camera, the system scans the road ahead and alerts you to slowing or stopped vehicles, cyclists, or pedestrians, even when crossing at an intersection. If you do not react in time and there is a risk of colliding with an oncoming vehicle, FCA 1.5 automatically applies full braking power.

FCA 1.5 is on by default and can be turned off in the ADAS settings.

Driving Attention Warning

The purpose of Driving Attention Warning (DAW) is to keep you and other road users safe. DAW analyses your attention level while driving. If it detects driver fatigue or inattentiveness, the system issues a warning and recommends a rest.

DAW is automatically on and can be deactivated in the ADAS settings.

High Beam Assist

To maximise your range of vision, INSTER offers High Beam Assist (HBA). When activated, the system scans for cars driving in the opposite direction, automatically switching between high and low beams. When no more cars are detected, it reactivates the high beams.

When the headlights are in ‘auto mode’ and the light is on at night, push the indicator stalk forward to activate HBA.

Leading Vehicle Departure Alert

Leading Vehicle Departure Alert (LVDA) is especially handy in stop-and-go traffic situations, such as in traffic jams and at traffic lights. Using forward-facing sensors and cameras, the system monitors the car in front and alerts you when it starts moving again. By minimising your reaction time, INSTER ensures a smoother and more efficient flow of traffic.

Once LVDA is turned on, it stays on. The feature can be turned off again in the ADAS settings.

Rear Occupant Alert

To keep backseat passengers safe, INSTER is equipped with Rear Occupant Alert (ROA). If you turn off the engine and exit INSTER, the system reminds you with an audio alert and a message in the cluster to check the rear seat for forgotten passengers or objects.

ROA in INSTER uses the logic of rear door operations. If a rear door has been opened and closed before or during the trip, the system assumes that someone or something may be in the rear seat.

Even if you’re forgetful, you have nothing to worry about. INSTER will make sure you don’t forget your work laptop – or your new sleeping puppy – in the backseat.

INSTER’s Smart Sense features integrate these advanced features to enhance safety, making your driving experience safer and more comfortable.
